Zhengzhou is the provincial capital of Henan, one of China's smallest provinces and also one of the most densely populated ones. Just 24 km south of Huanghe (Yellow River), Zhengzhou is also one of China's most important railway junction cities, where the major east-west (Long-hai) and north-south (Jing-guang) arteries intersect. The city is rich of historical and cultural heritages, owing largely to its position as the capital city of the Shang Dynasty (1800-1100 BC). On the east outskirts of Zhengzhou lie the remains of an ancient city from that period. 80 km west of Zhengzhou is the famous Shaolin Monastery (Shao4 Lin2 Shi4), where some of China's martial arts (kongfu) traditions were developed by Buddhist monks, as depicted in Jet Li's debut movie "Shaolin Monastery".
